Mushroom Day Celebrations Around the World: Cuajimoloyas, Oaxaca
High in Oaxaca’s cloud-wrapped Sierra Norte, the Cuajimoloyas mushroom festival turns the rainy season into a joyful celebration of biodiversity, Zapotec community knowledge and food.
A rainy-season celebration in the Sierra Norte
The 2026 Feria Regional de los Hongos Silvestres y Productos No Maderables took place July 18–19 in San Antonio Cuajimoloyas. The Government of Oaxaca’s official announcement described guided forest walks with biology and mycology specialists, tastings, workshops, a calenda procession, a race and expert talks. The official Oaxaca tourism listing connects the fair with the region’s biodiversity, traditional foods and community heritage.

Forest knowledge meets the kitchen
Visitors walk misty trails with local guides, learn how fungi are identified and discover how seasonal mushrooms enter traditional mountain cooking. The fair also supports local producers offering breads, atole, fruit, honey and other regional goods. This makes the celebration more than a food festival: it is a living lesson in how ecology, cultural knowledge and community tourism can reinforce one another.

Why rain changes the forest
What we call a mushroom is usually the temporary fruiting body of a much larger fungal organism. Moisture and temperature can trigger fruiting, while threadlike mycelium continues working through soil, leaf litter and wood. Fungi decompose organic matter, recycle nutrients and form partnerships with plant roots. A USDA Forest Service review explains how these relationships help sustain forest ecosystems.
Explore the landscape
Cuajimoloyas sits high in the Sierra Norte among pine-oak forest, foggy trails and dramatic viewpoints. See scenic photographs and practical destination information in El Universal Oaxaca’s illustrated festival guide, explore a map of San Antonio Cuajimoloyas, or read the village overview on Wikipedia. For firsthand travel perspective, an r/Oaxaca discussion includes visitor suggestions about seasonal mushroom tours; treat these comments as personal experience, not official guidance.
Gather responsibly
Never eat a wild mushroom based only on a photograph, app or social post. Join trained local guides, respect community rules and land access, and collect only where permitted. A festival guided by local experts is the ideal setting for learning safely.
