Mushroom Day Celebrations Around the World: Telluride, Colorado

Mushroom celebrations take many forms around the world, but few combine mountain adventure, science, food and joyful weirdness quite like the Telluride Mushroom Festival in Colorado.
A mountain town goes wonderfully fungal
Telluride has celebrated mushrooms since 1981. Set in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, the festival turns the surrounding forests into living classrooms through guided forays, identification sessions, lectures, culinary events and community gatherings. The Telluride Institute, which presents the festival, describes it as a weekend of mushroom love, community connection and everything fungi. The official Telluride tourism site also highlights the festival’s long-running focus on mycology and mushroom science.

What happens on a mushroom foray?
A foray is a guided field walk focused on finding, observing and identifying fungi. Participants learn to notice cap shape, gills or pores, stem structure, habitat and the trees growing nearby. They may also learn why a photograph, spore print and careful notes can be more useful than a quick guess.
The experience is less like a treasure hunt and more like becoming a forest detective. A mushroom is only the visible fruiting body of a much larger fungal organism, and its appearance can offer clues about what is happening in the soil, wood and roots around it.
Why fungi matter to a forest
Fungi are recyclers, partners, food sources and habitat-builders. A USDA Forest Service review of wood-decay fungi explains that fungi contribute to forest health through decomposition, mycorrhizal relationships, nutrient cycling and food resources for wildlife. Some fungi break down fallen wood. Others form partnerships with plant roots and help move water and nutrients through the ecosystem.
That ecological story is part of what makes a festival like Telluride so compelling: people arrive for the beautiful mushrooms and leave seeing the entire forest differently.

A responsible-foraging reminder
Wild mushroom identification requires training and local expertise. Never eat a wild mushroom based on a photograph, app or social-media post. Join an experienced guide or local mycological group, follow land-access rules and collect only where permitted.
