Mushroom Day Celebrations Around the World: UK Fungus Day

Waxcap mushroom explorer studying fungi in a British meadow for UK Fungus Day

UK Fungus Day is a nationwide invitation to slow down, look closely and discover the astonishing fungal life woven through Britain’s woods, meadows, gardens and laboratories.

A whole country goes fungal

Organized by the British Mycological Society, UK Fungus Day takes place on October 10, 2026. The official UK Fungus Day site brings together fungus walks, collections, exhibitions, science and technology, art, crafts, talks, quizzes and competitions. It is less a single festival than a connected celebration happening in communities across the country.

Current 2026 event information

Save the date: October 10, 2026.

Browse the official event hub and the official UK Fungus Day Facebook page for current flyers, local listings and organizer updates as they are released.

From citizen recording to fungal art

Participants can join a local foray, try the Big Fly Agaric Find, take part in photography and haiku activities, explore online talks or submit observations. The nationwide format makes space for scientists, artists, families and curious beginners. For background on the organizing body, see the British Mycological Society overview on Wikipedia.

Explore fungi on the map

The UK Fungus Day Find-a-Fungus project on iNaturalist turns observation into an interactive map. Community identifications can help observations reach research grade and contribute to the broader record of fungal diversity.

Watch a family fungi foray

This educational video from London’s Natural History Museum follows a family fungi foray and shows how much fungal diversity can hide in plain sight.

Why fungi deserve a day

Fungi decompose dead material and return nutrients to ecosystems. Many plants depend on mycorrhizal fungi associated with their roots to access water and nutrients. Others provide food or habitat for wildlife. To dig deeper, watch Kew’s introduction to mycorrhizal fungi and read the British Mycological Society’s conservation and recording resources.

Join responsibly

Photograph before collecting, follow local access rules and leave rare or unfamiliar fungi undisturbed. Never eat a wild mushroom based on an app, photo or social post. The British Mycological Society provides a code of conduct for responsible collection, research and education.
